Depression

Depression is a very common problem as 17% of Americans will experience at least one depressive episode during their lifetime, and another 6% will suffer from a chronic, mild depressive state. Five percent of the population suffers from depression during any one month period of time. Women have depression almost twice as often as men do.

Common symptoms of depression include low mood; sadness; inability to experience pleasure; significant weight loss or gain or significant change in appetite; can’t sleep or sleep too much; move much slower or faster than normal; lowered sex drive; low energy; lost motivation to do things, feelings of worthlessness; hopelessness; helplessness; loss of self confidence; overly self-critical; excessive guilt; decreased concentration; memory problems, indecisiveness; suicidal thoughts or ruminations about death.

Neurofeedback has been shown to help those who suffer from depression. Those who have genetic unipolar depression typically will have the most dramatic improvements. This disorder is characterized by: 1) having a history of depressive illness in blood relatives, 2) having a constant depression that doesn’t change even when you are having a good day, 3) not having responded all that well to medication, 5) psychotherapy maybe helped some, but hasn’t gotten to the core of the depression, 6) no history of manic or hypomanic episodes (abnormally elevated mood).

During the initial interview I will administer the "Beck Inventory for the Screening of Depression."  I also suggest that you have a medical examination to rule out hypothyroidism or other possible medical factors.

Taking antidepressant medications such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Welbutrin, Effexor, Desyrel, Serzone, Remeron, or Celexa will not interfere with achieving good results. However, as you improve, you will need to adjust your dose. With your permission I will send a note to your prescribing physician.
